Gadolinium Inhibits Mechanoelectrical Transduction

چکیده

Gadolinium (Gd3+) has been shown to prevent mechanoelectrical transduction believed to be mediated through stretch-activated channels. We investigated the possible role of Gd3+-sensitive channels in mediating baroreceptor activity in the carotid sinus of rabbits. Baroreceptor activity induced by a ramp increase of carotid sinus pressure was reduced significantly during exposure to Gd3+. The inhibition was dose-related and reversible, and was not associated with alteration of carotid sinus wall mechanics as the pressure-strain relationship was unaffected. Veratrine triggered action potentials from singleand multiple-baroreceptor fibers when their response to pressure was inhibited by Gd3+. This suggests that the effect of Gd3+ on baroreceptors in the isolated carotid sinus was specific to their mechanical activation. The results suggest that stretch-activated ion channels sensitive to Gd3+ may be the mechanoelectrical transducers of rabbit carotid sinus baroreceptors. (J. Clin. Invest. 1994. 94:2392-2396.)

Stochastic Resonance in Hair Cell Mechanoelectrical Transduction

Hair cells are the mechanoelectrical transducers in the auditory system of many species, including humans. Experiments show that transduction in individual hair cells displays stochastic resonance, with optimum response at the natural noise level of living cells. We find that many of the observed features are captured by a simple version of a physiologically faithful model of the transduction m...

A Precisely Defined Role for the Tip Link-Associated Protein TMIE in the Mechanoelectrical Transduction Channel Complex of Inner Ear Hair Cells

Inner ear hair cells transduce sound waves and acceleration. In the quest to identify the molecular machinery underlying mechanoelectrical transduction, Zhao et al. (2014) in this issue of Neuron reveal that the TMIE protein, essential for hearing, physically interacts with tip link protein protocadherin-15.

Efferent Control of the Electrical and Mechanical Properties of Hair Cells in the Bullfrog's Sacculus

BACKGROUND Hair cells in the auditory, vestibular, and lateral-line systems respond to mechanical stimulation and transmit information to afferent nerve fibers. The sensitivity of mechanoelectrical transduction is modulated by the efferent pathway, whose activity usually reduces the responsiveness of hair cells. The basis of this effect remains unknown. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We e...

Anomalous Brownian motion discloses viscoelasticity in the ear's mechanoelectrical-transduction apparatus.

The ear detects sounds so faint that they produce only atomic-scale displacements in the mechanoelectrical transducer, yet thermal noise causes fluctuations larger by an order of magnitude. Explaining how hearing can operate when the magnitude of the noise greatly exceeds that of the signal requires an understanding both of the transducer's micromechanics and of the associated noise. Using micr...

The composition and role of cross links in mechanoelectrical transduction in vertebrate sensory hair cells.

The key components of acousticolateralis systems (lateral line, hearing and balance) are sensory hair cells. At their apex, these cells have a bundle of specialized cellular protrusions, which are modified actin-containing microvilli, connected together by extracellular filaments called cross links. Stereociliary deflections open nonselective cation channels allowing ions from the extracellular...
